Our animal hospital offers Prosthodontics as part of our extensive veterinary dentistry services. Prosthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that deals with implants and reconstruction. Dogs are notorious for chewing on substances that can cause excessive tooth wear--such as cage bars, wood, rocks, balls, hard chew toys, etc. Over time, this excessive tooth wear can cause a tooth to become more prone to fracture and/or painful root exposure.
Teeth that are worn can be restored through a process of prosthodontic implants. Crowns are the most common implant used. Crowns are used to completely cap or partially cover a worn tooth to protect the tooth from fracturing. Previously fractured teeth may also benefit from crowns to make them stronger and eliminate the need for removal. Ask our veterinary dentistry specialists if you think prosthodontics may be right for your pet.
