Dr. Erin Portillo, our medical director, is a fourth generation Chicoan. She has a bachelor's degree in Animal Science & master's degree in Immunology from the University of California Davis, and she received her DVM degree from Oklahoma State University. Dr. Portillo completed her internship at Mississippi State University followed by a three-year small animal Internal Medicine residency at Iowa State University. She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine with interests in endoscopy, hematology, and gastroenterology.

Dr. Daniel Gebhart received his BA in Biology from UC Santa Cruz, received his DVM at Ross University, and completed his clinical year at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Gebhart went on to do a research fellowship at Texas A&M Institute of Preclinical Studies from 2009 to 2010 and then completed a surgical and medical veterinary internship at VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital. He moved to Chico in 2011 and has been at Valley Oak since. He is the co-medical director with Dr. Portillo. Dr. Gebhart's professional interests include emergency medicine, critical care, and ophthalmology.
