Local Medical Issues
There are a lot of medical issues that can impact your pet's health, and that require your attention over the entire year. For example, heartworm, which can affect both cats and dogs. Since heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes, it's a serious cause for concern. Heartworm infection can cause your pet to have trouble breathing as well. Since winter temperatures do not get cold enough here to kill mosquito eggs, heartworm is a year-round risk. Make sure you're treating your loved one with heartworm prevention medication, which many prescription flea medications already contain.
Like heartworm, the potential for flea and tick infestation, or intestinal parasites, poses a problem in any season.
Some dogs experience fatigue, which can indicate a flea and/or tick infestation, or even a serious health concern that if left untreated can be life threatening to your pet.
If you plan on taking your dog out for a walk or to your local dog park, remember to keep them protected from fleas and ticks and have their annual checkups to keep up to date on their vaccinations. If your dog visits the groomer, dog parks or your Veterinarian, remember the Bordetella vaccination! It can protect your loved one from contracting an upper respiratory infection that is easily picked up from being in contact with other animals. All it takes is a bark in the wrong direction!
Also, if your pet likes to lap up those rain puddles, run in parks, or swim in the water, a vaccine can protect them from contracting the bacterial disease known as Leptospirosis. This is a zoonotic disease, meaning humans can get it from animals, and in humans it nearly always leads to lengthy hospitalization.
Remember...Protection = Prevention!
Finally, contrary to what you'd expect, allergies are a year-round issue. Many pets suffer from skin and ear allergies, the signs of which include scratching, redness in the ears and scaly skin.
Prevention is always the best cure!
