Dorsal Laminectomy (Cervical and Lumbosacral)
The lumbosacral region refers to the lower back of your dog. A dorsal laminectomy is a surgical procedure to remove a portion of spinal vertebra bone from the dorsal, or back, of the vertebral column. A lumbosacral dorsal laminectomy is a surgical procedure performed in the lower, rear portion of your dog's spine. This procedure is performed to take pressure off the nerves when a dog has lumbosacral disease, which is generally a combination of disc protrusion and arthritic changes to the joint compressing the nerves. As this is an area of great movement, stabilization using screws, rods and cement is sometimes needed to be done concurrently with the laminectomy procedure. (Spinal cord is typically gone at this point and disease here usually only involves the nerves of the cauda equina)
