Dr. Teresa Boughen grew up on an acreage in Manitoba where her family had numerous cats, dogs and horses. Her family dogs ranged from Border Collie to Chihuahua mix and at one point numbered 5 dogs at one time. She knew from the age of 7 years that her career choice was to become a veterinarian. Dr. Boughen is a 1982 graduate of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. She has been with Associate Veterinary Clinics continuously since 1983 working first at Calgary North Veterinary Hospital then the Huntington Hills locations. Since 1988 she worked full time at the Hunterhorn Veterinary Clinic. Upon the merging of the Hunterhorn and MacEwan clinics at the end of July, 2016 Teresa joined the team at the MacEwan Veterinary Clinic working Wednesday through Saturday.
Dr. Boughen is keenly interested in providing dog and cat owners with the knowledge on how to best care for their canine and feline family members. She has a special interest in dermatology, cytology and soft tissue surgery.
Having pets as “kids” Dr. Boughen currently owns a shepherd mix dog, Lena, adopted as a puppy in 2010 from Misty Creek Dog Rescue. Lena had been rescued as a 5 week old puppy and then fostered until 4 and a half months when she was adopted by Teresa. Given her early puppyhood experiences Lena does have some anxiety issues including separation anxiety. Lena did well with her obedience, agility and scent hurdle classes but she did not “love” dog sports so she is happier to just go for walks and hikes and play with her toys. Until September of 2016 Lena had to share her home with a lovely American Shorthair cat, Spirit. Sadly Spirit had to be euthanized at the age of 17 years due to worsening medical problems. In December of 2016 a feisty 2 year old Domestic Shorthair, Adele, came home from the MEOW Foundation with the goal of teaching Lena a newfound respect for cats. Over time, Lena and Adele have managed to develop a mutual tolerance as long as Lena remembers who is really in charge.
